BIOGRAPHY

Robyn Sweaney's practice excavates the complexities of place by responding to the suburban mundane of Australian environments. Tightly refined homes and streetscapes function as repositories of identity — aesthetic incarnations of the belief structures influencing human behaviour on emotional, intellectual and spiritual levels. Working primarily in acrylic, gouache and graphite, Sweaney has exhibited regularly since 1992. In 2019 she was awarded the Trustees Watercolour Prize in the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW.

"My paintings became portraits of homes, not houses."

Artist Statement

I have always been fascinated by other people's houses. Though outwardly many houses are generic, I am intrigued by the way people, in creative and resourceful ways, express themselves within the boundaries of their own environments. I am drawn to a subtle and quirky aesthetic — that which combines design elements of colour, symmetry, pattern and balance.

Homes and streetscapes can divulge more than their mere exteriors, functioning as repositories of identity. For us as viewers they can convey a complex emotional response depending on our own experiences. Outwardly generic, they are familiar faces within the distinctly Australian landscape, yet they vary according to their locale, their owner's personality and consequently affect the feel and character of that area.

I intentionally leave people out of my compositions. I don't want to know who lives there. I want to create my own narrative and a sense of mystery — an openness for other people to create their own impression of who might live there.
